Consecutive interpreting is a translation process in which the interpreter verbally translates the speaker’s words into the target language when the speaker pauses after completing a sentence or thought.

Devices required for simultaneous interpreting are not used for consecutive interpreting. In order to facilitate the translation, the translator can take notes during consecutive interpreting. Knowledge of the topic of discussion, as well as of the professional terminology is an essential component of the consecutive interpreting process.
 

• Consecutive interpreting is suitable for smaller events and meetings where it is translated only into one language. When planning an event, it is important to consider that the duration of the event doubles with this kind of interpreting, thus making it more appropriate for smaller groups of people. It is mainly used in negotiations of diplomatic, economic or political nature.
   
• In consecutive interpreting, it is recommended that the client provide the translator with the topic (terminology and information) of discussion at least the day before the interpreting so that the translator may adequately prepare. It is also desirable to have knowledge of the relations between the parties participating in the meeting, the history of the meeting and expected problems.
