Whispered interpreting

Whispered interpreting

Whispered interpreting or chuchotage is a form of interpreting in which the translator stands very close to the speaker and simultaneously translates in a low voice, so as not to interfere with other participants of the event. This type of translation is suitable for a small group of people. Whispered interpreting is mainly used as an alternative to simultaneous or consecutive interpreting.

  • Whispered interpreting is similar to simultaneous interpreting, but does not require equipment. However, sometimes there are situations when the listener has a wireless handset that can be used to follow the translation while the translator translates using a microphone.

  • Whispered interpreting is demanding because the translator has to speak loudly enough to be heard by those intended to hear the translation, but also quietly enough so as not to disturb other participants. Therefore, it poses an effort for the translator's vocal cords and hearing. This type of translation increases the level of noise in the hall, so it is also demanding for the listeners.
