Simultaneous interpreting

Simultaneous interpreting

Simultaneous interpreting is a form of interpreting in which the translator speaks in parallel with the speaker, that is, a simultaneous translator listens to the presentation and translates it into the given language at the same time. The manner of translating in which a number of different activities take place in parallel makes simultaneous interpreting a very complex process. The biggest advantage of simultaneous interpreting is saving time because of simultaneous presentation and translation.

  • Research shows that only 12% of people have the ability to do simultaneous interpreting, most of which are women. Due to the complexity of this type of interpreting, it is recommended that the translators interchange every half an hour.

  • During simultaneous interpreting, a person is required to speak in literary standard language precisely and clearly, and avoid buzzwords and dialects. The tone and the distance from the microphone should also be taken into consideration, and speech should be poised and of moderate speed.

  • During simultaneous interpreting, special equipment is used consisting of a translation booth, headphones and a corresponding sound unit. During interpreting, the translator is in a soundproof booth and listens to the speaker using headphones, while translating what they hear into the target language using a microphone. The participant can select the language of translation on their receiver.

  • Simultaneous interpreting is most common in conferences, trials or diplomatic meetings.

The roots of simultaneous interpreting date back to 1945 in Nuremberg. At that time, Nazi criminals were tried in Nuremberg. During the Nuremberg processes, 4 official languages were used: English, German, Russian and French. Due to the scope of this kind of interpreting, the idea of simultaneous interpreting emerged and consecutive interpreting was replaced by simultaneous interpreting for the first time in history.

INTERPRETA’s team has well-educated interpreters trained in simultaneous interpreting, as one of the most difficult types of translation. We adapt to all kinds of meetings and events, as well as a variety of language combinations. All data and information presented during interpreting are strictly confidential. The highest level of confidentiality at INTERPRETA is guaranteed by the ISO 27001:2005 certificate.
